ABOUT SHUNYATA HEALING ARTS

Anita Poushan

Based in Crestone, Colorado, Shunyata Healing Arts exists to provide integrated massage therapy to all and increase access to education, self practice and holistic health. Shunyata founder, Anita Poushan trained under Dan Retuta and Sue Beck at the Crestone Healing Arts Center in 2016 in Swedish massage, acupressure, reiki, hot stone massage, aromatherapy and reflexology with a foundation in kundalini, chi gong, tai chi, Aryuvedic and traditional Chinese medicine systems.

Before founding Shunyata Healing Arts in 2016, Anita was a social justice organizer in Washington DC where she began studying the relationship between social systems and health. While working as an organizer on environment, anti-nuclear weapons campaigns, documentary film and volunteering with Black Lives Matters, she started studying herbalism, food systems and kundalini yoga.

Now a licensed massage therapist since 2016 and Ashtanga practitioner, Anita has worked to provide massage therapy and body work across the Crestone community for individuals, retreats, and gatherings, working with Valley View Hot Springs and Zapata Ranch as well as working with Annie Pace to prepare community Sattvic meals. Recently attending the 2018 Health Justice Jam in DC, Anita continues to focus her work at the intersection between healing arts and community.

Treatment Modalities

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is the foundation of Anita’s integrated treatments and the most common contemporary massage modality. Unlike jin shin do, acupressure or acupuncture which target individual points in the body for release, Swedish is characterized by long strokes across the body to improve overall health by enhancing the circulation of blood and lymph, muscle tension release, joint flexibility, and mind-body relaxation.

SHIATSU & Acupressure

A traditionally Japanese massage therapy modality, Shiatsu is based on the Chinese Traditional concept of Chi,Qi, or Ki (气)- energy movement. By focusing specific points in the body along the energy’s meridian lines, similar to acupressure, Shiatsu focuses on the release of energy and blockages. Acupressure, from Chinese Traditional Medicine and like acupuncture, targets blockages along the meridians for release using touch instead of needles.

REFLEXOLOGY

An element of reflexology and awareness of the system of reflexology, working with the correlation between the feet, hands and the body, into each treatment. The feet and hands contain “reflex” points which influence organs, glands, and body “zones”. Massaging these reflex centers encourages new vigor to flow into the corresponding areas of the body.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is special treatment modality, requiring the heating at a consistent temperature of hot stones that are used to calm and release muscular areas while receiving treatment. To retain heat, the stones are often basalt, a type of volcanic rock.

Philosophy

Continuing from Anita’s work in social justice, community and environmental organizing, Shunyata approaches body work and wellness as empowerment by activating the bodies’ self-healing capacity. She works within the community to build health confidence, a term she encourages her clients to use to build self-awareness and feel empowered to understand their individual healing process, focusing on bridging the mind body gap while rooting in education and self-awareness. Integrated treatments help us to understand blockages through acupressure, acupuncture, shiatsu or jin shin do, imbalances in our muscular or internal harmony with Swedish massage, calming of the nervous system with hydrotherapy and aromatherapy and intakes help us think through the relationship between our food systems, mental health, environment, personal history, recent life changes and socio-political state.
